Each summer I return to camp IYA because they emphasize tradition and culture. This camp is a “Gather of Nations”, it is different tribal youth coming together. It is an experience I will never forget.
Jennifer Richards, Camper 1996
The younger cabin members looked up to us older kids, depending on us because we all love each other even if we’re from different states and tribes because we found each other at Camp IYA.
Megan Perry, Camper 2004
I enjoy working at camp because I love to see how much potential, talent, skill and leadership our native youth have within themselves, their families and communities. Camp inspires campers to be strong, proud leaders! Thank you for letting me be a part of the IYA family for another year. I’m already looking forward to next year.
Navajo, Counselor 2017
IYA Camp lets me learn how to grow healthy, learn how important we are as a people, and lets people know that everybody can do something with their self and their future. When people have problems at home they can come to this camp, forget all about it and have fun and learn. IYA is the highlight of my summer and I hope that it will always be part of my life.
Hopi, Camper 2017
I have been coming to IYA for at least 6 years now. Being young and coming to camp was one of the hardest things I have done & it made a major impact on my life.
It taught me how to be more independent & outgoing. I made many new friends & met all kinds of people from different tribes. I know when the time comes I’ll be back and become a counselor and I will send my younger sibling to camp so she will follow in my footsteps of being an IYA camper.
Deatra Sinyella, Camper 2013
I love camp because it is created around empowering and challenging our native youth to take pride in who they are and to embrace every opportunity to learn more about who they are as native people. I am grateful for my time at IYA and to be a part of the heart work done by IYA because everything is done with the intention of honoring our past, present and future. Whether the kids realize it or not, the skills and responsibilities they learn at IYA will help them become more resilient, strong and successful native people.
Otoe-Missouria, Choctaw Counselor 2017
I love coming back to camp every year. I get to do new things and see new people and old friends. It teaches me to be a leader, responsible, respect, and makes me want to finish school and do something good in life.
Isanti Dakota, Camper 2017
Indian Youth of America strives to give children something they’ve never experienced. IYA gets its participants involved, active and builds character. The medicine to a rough home life. The laughter to the start of a great day. The fun is happy. The meaning to do good for the younger Indian community; changing lives.
Mikyla Beck, Camper & Jr. Counselor 2013
I am having fun at camp…we go on field trips…I learned to hoop dance. We made puppets and watched a puppet show. We played volleyball and mushball. We made all kinds of arts and crafts. I made a lot of friends from…different tribes.
Samantha White, Camper 2000
It is my hope that all Indian youth in America will take advantage of opportunities to know others, share with them, grow and LIVE! IYA helped me to do these things…I will never forget that.
Tauna Lockhart, Camper 1981
